Schools in Waterloo Region - The Heart of the Community - By Debbie Dover

Imagine a school with an after school drop-in program, and basketball, volleyball, scouts and guides in the evenings. On weekends, it’s a place where community groups hold concerts, badminton practices and basketball games.  This is happening across the province through the Community Use of School (CUS) Program.

The Community Use of Schools (CUS) is an initiative of the Ministry of Educationthat supports access to school space outside of school hours for not-for-profit community groups.  In Waterloo Region, both local boards offer the Community Use of Schools Program and schools are becoming the ‘heart of the community’ providing success for each and a place for all.

Please contact the Waterloo Catholic District School Board and the Waterloo Region District School Board to find out more about the CUS program, fees, availability of spaces, and approval process for not-for-profit community groups to access school facilities outside school hours.
