Stretch for Success

Stretch for Success- Dr. Shannon Viana

Stretch for Success began as a pilot to address a growing trend in muscular and joint injuries in children in Waterloo Region.  Over recent years health care practitioners have noticed an increase in posture based aches and pains in young children including headaches, neck, shoulder and low back pain.  Usually these symptoms first appear in university students and adults, but physicians are now seeing them in 5 and 6 year old children

Dr. Shannon Viana, a family chiropractor, approached the Manulife Centre for Health Research to create a program for families in Waterloo Region to address this change.  Dr. Viana has worked over the last year with children’s physiotherapist Pam Ringrose to create three age appropriate exercise programs.  With the help of the Faculty of Social Work at WLU and the KW Community Fund, the segments were videotaped in the fall of 2015 and launched in the Stretch for Success is a FREE online physical education resource for teachers and families).  It provides teachers with exercise videos easy to use resource in their classrooms, fact sheets, and quick 5 minute stretch breaks.  Check the program here

The program has been launched in the Waterloo Catholic District School Board in the Winter of 2016.  School can win a free stationary bike for the school!.  Each participating school has been given a unique log-in - the school that logs the most use of the website by June 1st wins!  Earn extra ballots by coming to the Growing Up Healthy Show on May 14th at LANGS and take the bike for a spin.

The website video content will be password accessible until after the contest and then opened to everyone.
